Abandoned Vehicle Bureau

The Abandoned Vehicle Bureau conducts the identification and removal of abandoned vehicles within the town. A motor vehicle shall be deemed to be an abandoned vehicle if left unattended as follows:

  • With no license plates affixed thereto, for more than six hours on any highway or other public place;
  • With license plates affixed for more than twenty-four (24) hours on any highway or other public place, except a portion of a highway or public place on which parking is legally permitted.
  • For more than forty-eight (48) hours, after the parking of such vehicle shall have become illegal, if left on a portion of a highway or public place on which parking is legally permitted.
  • For more than ninety-six (96) hours on a portion of a highway or public place on which parking is otherwise legally permitted.

To report vehicles abandoned on:

  • the street, Town beach, Town park, Town parking lot or Town right-of-way: Submit the exact location of the vehicle and nearest cross street, along with any pertinent information (license plate, if any, make, model and color of the vehicle), to the Town of Huntington Abandoned Vehicle Bureau online, by email to EPagano@HuntingtonNY.gov or by calling (631) 351-3234.
  • private property: Submit the address where the abandoned vehicle is located, along with any pertinent information (license plate, if any, make, model and color of the vehicle), to the Code Enforcement Division online or at (631) 351-3167. Pertinent information may include information such as the license plate if any, the make, model and color of the vehicle.

What are the fees associated with a vehicle that has been impounded?

Impound Fees: Tow fee is $500.00 plus $200 in administrative costs. Storage fee is $10.00 per day

When is a vehicle subject to investigation by the Abandoned Vehicle Bureau?

A vehicle is subject to investigation by the Abandoned Vehicle Bureau if it is on a Town roadway, Town right-of-way or Town property (municipal lot, Town beach, Town park, etc.) and it is either not legally registered, inspected or insured to be on that location OR The Town has witnessed a legally registered, inspected and insured vehicle has not been moved from it’s present location for more than 4 consecutive days.

Why was my vehicle tagged with an orange Abandoned Vehicle sticker?

A vehicle is subject to being tagged with an Abandoned Vehicle sticker if it is on a Town roadway, Town right-of-way or Town property (municipal lot, Town beach, Town park, etc.) and it is either not legally registered, inspected or insured to be on the Town street or property (expired tags, etc.) OR The vehicle is legally registered, inspected and insured but has been stored in the same location on a Town roadway, Town right-of-way or Town property for more than 4 consecutive days without moving.
