Councilwoman Theresa Mari

Theresa Mari is a dedicated professional with over three decades of experience as an attorney in private practice.  Her journey started with a strong foundation in education. She pursued her undergraduate studies at SUNY Binghamton. Her academic journey continued as she earned her law degree from Hofstra University School of Law, setting the stage for a successful career in the legal field.

Theresa initially specialized in business law and later transitioned primarily into real estate law and family law, acting as an advocate for children for over 30 years.  Theresa’s extensive legal experience has equipped her with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate complex legal matters, making her a valuable asset to her clients and her community. Theresa has demonstrated her leadership skills by holding various positions in legal associations. She served as the president of the Suffolk County Women's Bar Association, President of the Suffolk County Matrimonial Bar Association, and a two-term Director of the Suffolk County Bar Association. Additionally, Theresa served as Associate Dean of the Suffolk County Bar Association Academy of Law and President of the Huntington Lawyer’s Club. She is currently a member of the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Committee, appointed by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi.

Theresa has a tremendous drive to advocate for the projects and causes that are most important to her.  Her personal experience as a breast cancer survivor has motivated her to be a spokesperson for breast cancer awareness, emphasizing the importance of mammograms and breast health. Theresa is a local Centerport resident, whose decision to run for public office was driven by her deep-seated desire to serve the township she’s proud to call home. Her background as an attorney, combined with her charitable efforts, uniquely position her to make a positive impact on the Town of Huntington.  She is ready to leverage her diverse skillset to benefit her constituents. Her priorities align with the needs and desires of the Huntington community. She is committed to protecting taxpayers' hard-earned dollars and ensuring fiscal responsibility and is determined to maintain Huntington as an ideal place to live, work, and play while preserving its suburban charm.

One of Theresa’s top concerns is managing the town's development and infrastructure. While acknowledging the need for housing in Huntington, she opposes large development projects that could compromise the character of our community. She emphasizes the importance of evaluating each project on its merits, striking a balance between growth and preserving the town's unique identity. She is resolute in holding the line on taxes and working with the town board to maintain infrastructure and continuing the town’s work to improve our roads and safeguard of aquifers and drinking water quality. She also places a strong focus on public safety, especially for the town's youth, and aims to create positive programs in collaboration with local youth organizations, school districts, and institutions offering drug rehabilitation and mental health services.

Theresa Mari's journey from a successful attorney and philanthropist to a dedicated public servant is marked by her commitment to preserving the Town of Huntington's unique character and quality of life. As she begins her tenure as a Councilmember, the residents of Huntington can expect her to be accessible and work tirelessly to protect their interests and ensure a bright future for their town.
