The Town's municipal and contracted sanitation carters will only collect residential trash and recycling curbside from dedicated Town roads.  For liability purposes collection from private roads, shared driveways, and unpaved roads is not permitted under the residential refuse contract. In order to still provide sanitation services to properties under these conditions, collection is made from the Town's Right of Way at the intersection of the dedicated Town road and the private road, shared driveway or unpaved roadway.

The Department of EWM recognizes that certain circumstances will make depositing residential refuse and recyclables at the intersection of the dedicated Town road and the private road untenable for some homeowners whether it be due to distance, disability, or some other hardship. In these cases residents may enter into signed agreements for "back-door service" with the sanitation carter under contract for the neighborhood.

Back-door service consists of a sanitation contractor collecting refuse and recyclables from a residential dwelling at a location other than the curbside immediately adjacent to the front or side of the residential dwelling on a dedicated Town road. Back-door service is beyond the scope of the residential carting contract and is therefore an additional charge to the resident receiving the service. Hold Harmless Agreements are also required to limit liability as a result of collecting on private property.

Back Door Service is promulgated by Town Code ยง 117-29 which states that any homeowner receiving residential curbside collection from the Town or its contractors may contract for back-door service directly with the carting contractor, who must provide such service upon request. The charge shall be reasonable and negotiated between the homeowner and the contractor, and shall be billed and collected from the homeowner by the contractor without any assistance from the Town.

Back-door service is required for collection from private and non-town roads, but the service is also available to any resident who desires collection from any place other than the curb including those on dedicated roads who, for whatever reason, would like to utilize the service.

Residents interested in obtaining additional information should contact their residential sanitation collector directly. Please refer to the back cover of the printed Refuse Calendar for contact information for your sanitation carter. If you do not know which carter services your home then use the My Services webpage to determine who collects in your neighborhood.

Residents who receive municipal sanitation collection are entitled to the same back-door service but their agreement and the subsequent billing will be done directly by the Town. If the Town's Municipal Refuse Division services your neighborhood and you would like to start back door service or if you would like to receive additional information regarding rates for municipal back-door service please email the Department of EWM. Please include your address in the email so we can confirm municipal service.
