Tow Truck Business Licenses & Operator's Permits*

 

Per Huntington Town Code, Chapter 183, Tow Trucks & Towing for Hire 
Tow Truck Business Licenses are good for a period of one-year and expire on October 1. 

Town Truck Business License Requirements

  • Notarized Application indicating whether Regular Towing, Heavy Towing or Private Parking Lot towing to be submitted on a yearly basis. In the case of private lot towing, the private contract or agreement must be submitted to 2nd Precinct, Suffolk County Police Department, and to Town Clerk with the license application or renewal.   • Photocopy of current NYS Vehicle Registration, Proof of NYS Inspection and Proof of Insurance for each vehicle.
  • Photocopy of Current Certificate of Insurance, which must include all vehicles, garage liability and be in conformance with amounts stated in Town Code, Chapter 183-43.
  • Certificate of Operation for each Vehicle in Use. Bottom portion is to be filled out, signed by owner of vehicle in presence of Notary Public and paid for in Town Clerk’s Office when application and vehicle inspection sheets are complete and presented for review by staff member.
  • License Fee: New/Renewal (all categories of towing): $325 Certificate of Operation and $85 for each vehicle. (Late fees will be charged if application is received after November 1). All fees are non-refundable and must be paid by check or money order upon submission of application.

Tow Truck Operator’s Permit Requirements

  • Truck Operator's Permit Application. (Download Operator's Permit Application).
  • Proof of Fingerprinting Receipt (see note below)1
  • Doctor's Statement: A witnessed statement from a doctor licensed to practice medicine in NY State stating that applicant has been thoroughly examined within thirty (30) days of application and demonstrates no affliction of any physical or mental disease or infirmity which might make him/her an unsafe or unsatisfactory permit holder, and has no drug or alcohol dependency or use other than by prescription. (Note: Results of Separate Drug Testing Must Accompany the Doctor’s Statement). 
  • Photographs: Two identical (2” x 2”, head and shoulders) photographs taken no longer than sixty (60) days prior to submission of application. 
  • NYS Driver’s License: If the vehicle you tow has a GVWR of over 10,000 pounds and the gross combination weight rating (GVWR) of this vehicle and your tow truck is more than 26,000 pounds, you need a Class A driver license with a tow truck endorsement (“W”). If the GVWR of your tow truck and the towed vehicle does not exceed this weight limit, you will need at least a Non-CDL Class C license with a tow truck endorsement (“W”). 
  • Training Course Certificate as may be required.
  • Permit Fee: $45-  Permit expires on October 1. All fees are non-refundable and must be paid by check or money order upon submission of application. (Fingerprinting fees are additional).

Note: A penalty of twenty dollars ($20.00) shall be charged to the maker of a check returned for insufficient funds.
