As we all let out a sigh of relief today, we are not out of the woods with Henri just yet. With tropical storm conditions continuing into this evening, including heavy rains (total rainfall expected from 3-6 inches) and storm surge, we are still at risk for falling tree limbs, road flooding, flooding along our waterfront communities, and surf and rip currents in our waterways.
Avoid leaving the house for the remainder of the day if you can and do not enter our waterways!
Report road flooding, downed trees/tree debris and wires blocking roads to Highway at 631-499-0444 or at HuntingtonNY.gov/Highway
Report power outages or downed wires to PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0075, psegliny.com or text OUT to PSEGLI or (773454).
In the event of a gas emergency, or if you smell gas, National Grid advises you to call 911 or 1-800-490-0045.
Report emergencies to 911.
Report public safety and traffic
safety issues online at huntingtonny.gov or call our Public Safety 24/7
Emergency hotline at 631-351-3234.
In addition, gas customers experiencing flooding should follow these safety tips:
• Do not turn off the gas meter even in the event of an evacuation. The gas meter should be left on to maintain proper pressure in the gas piping within the house and to prevent water from entering the lines should flooding occur. Most gas appliances have safety valves that shut off the flow of gas automatically if the pilot light goes out.
• If your appliances have been in contact with water, please contact a licensed plumbing or heating contractor to make sure the appliances are safe to operate.
• If National Grid has shut your gas service off for safety reasons, please contact a licensed plumbing or heating contractor before contacting National Grid. The licensed plumbing or heating contractor will make sure that your service is safe to restore.
• Don’t forget to check outdoor natural gas appliances, such as pool heaters and gas grills.
Be safe Huntington!
