On-Leash Dog Parks and Trails

Dogs are allowed on-leash in most of the Town of Huntington’s 140+ parks! Pet parents should keep in mind several rules to ensure enjoyment for all park visitors:

ü Keep your dog leashed (6 ft. or shorter)

ü Pick up after your dog

ü Never leave your dog unattended or off-leash*

ü Correct any aggressive behavior

*Unless in a designated off-leash area.

These rules apply when visiting Town parks. There are a total of 180+ parks located within the Town of Huntington when you count all the New York State, Suffolk County and Village parks! Please follow the guidelines set by the County, State and Villages when visiting those parks.

Suggested trail walks with dogs:

Find a suggested trail map below or visit our interactive park locator or interactive trails map to find a park or trail near you!

Please adhere to the following rules while walking your dog:

All dogs in those areas where such animals are permitted shall be restrained at all times on adequate leashes not greater than six (6) feet in length and shall not run at large. Dog waste must be immediately collected and removed by the owner or person in charge of the dog.

  • Keep your dog leashed at all times.
  • Clean up after your dog and place waste in the proper receptacles.
  • Yield to other trail users.
  • Keep your dog and yourself on the marked trails.
  • Never leave your dog unattended, inside or outside of the car.

Top Four Reasons to Leash Your Dog:

  1. Wildlife may not survive an encounter with an unleashed dog. Even a very sweet and obedient dog may accidentally harm or stress ground-nesting birds or small mammals.
  2. Keeping your dog on leash and on designated trails in natural areas helps prevent erosion and destruction of trail side vegetation.
  3. Some park visitors, especially small children and seniors, feel frightened or uncomfortable when they encounter a dog.
  4. It's the law. You could be fined.

Off-Leash Dog Run

Well-behaved dogs can go off-leash at the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter’s dog run, located on Deposit Road, East Northport.

Please remember to pick up after your dog and correct any aggressive behavior to keep the environment fun for all visitors!
