The ponds, streams, tidal marshes, and beaches within the Crab Meadow Watershed provide habitat for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife and wide variety of plants, recreational opportunities for the surrounding community.
Water quality in streams, ponds, and wetlands associated with developed areas can be degraded by stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces like roads, parking lots, roofs and compacted ground. Agricultural runoff, use of fertilizers and pesticides and illegal dumping or draining of chemicals, oil, trash and wash water into storm drains adds more pollutants.
A hydrology and watershed characterization study are currently underway
with the objective of understanding the environmental drivers and
stressors within the Crab Meadow Watershed . The assessment will
provide the basis for the development of a Watershed Stewardship Plan.
Community members can take many steps to help protect and improve water quality including:
- Participate in volunteer monitoring
- Build a rain garden
- Organize a trash cleanup
- Educate others about Water Quality Protection
