KIWANIS CLUB OF HUNTINGTON PARTNERS WITH  COUNCILMAN EUGENE COOK AND THE TOWN OF HUNTINGTON FOR A HOMETOWN HEROES BANNER PROGRAM

Huntington, Long Island – Huntington Councilman Eugene Cook along with the Huntington Town Board sponsored a Hometown Heroes Program with the Huntington Kiwanis Club.  The Huntington Kiwanis Club will be selling banners that honor a hometown hero who has served or is serving in the U.S. Armed Services; these banners will be hung on lampposts by the Town throughout Huntington.

Applications for the program are now available, with the banners hanging from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.  The banner cost is $200, with a portion of the proceeds to be administered by the Kiwanis Club of Huntington to benefit local children’s and veteran’s organizations within Huntington.  In addition to a banner that will be hung on a Town of Huntington lamppost, you will have the ability to share a loved one’s story on the Huntington Kiwanis’s website.

A photo of a Hometown Hero banner hanging in Pennsylvania was brought to the attention of Councilman Cook by a local Army Veteran Jack Armstrong, who wanted to see the banners celebrating our veterans beautifying Huntington.  After doing some research, Councilman Cook reached out to Ralph Somma of the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club who organized a Hometown Heroes Program in the Village of Lindenhurst; through Mr. Somma, Councilman Cook learned the Huntington Kiwanis was interested in expanding the program to Huntington.

“Thank you to Chris Barth of the Huntington Kiwanis we were able to have a pilot program last year, for Kiwanis members to honor a local veteran at Heckscher Park and this year the program is being rolled out town-wide.  I am proud to be able to work with Chris and the Huntington Kiwanis Club to not only honor the men and women who make sacrifices to serve our Country and protect the freedoms we enjoy, but to benefit local veteran’s and children’s organizations.  The Kiwanis Club of Huntington has worked throughout the years to benefit local Huntington charities while beautifying the town, and this program will continue that mission for the Huntington Kiwanis.”, stated Councilman Eugene Cook.

Chris Barth, of the Huntington Kiwanis Club said, “The Huntington Kiwanis has always had great success with our Field of Honor displayed on Huntington Town Hall’s lawn. We wanted to expand how we honored our veterans by beautifying Huntington in a way that allowed us to learn the story of our neighbor’s loved ones.  Huntington is proud of our veterans and this program will allow each veteran and their family to know how grateful we are for their sacrifices.  If you don’t have a veteran to honor, you can sponsor a banner for a family who can’t afford one. “
