Freshwater Wetlands & Flood Plains
Freshwater Wetlands
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) classifies "Freshwater Wetlands" properties in the State. The locations of all such properties known to exist in 1989 was reviewed by (DEC) and mapped by the US Geological Service (USGS). Copies of the resulting Quadrant Maps or "Freshwater Wetlands Maps" as they are called covering the Town of Huntington can be view in at: the Town Clerk’s Office, the Planning & Environment Office or Maritime Services. In addition, Maritime Services keeps a list of all wetlands and adjacent properties within one hundred feet (100') thereof indexed Suffolk County Tax map number.
The Freshwater Wetlands Map was updated and finalized in 1993, but wetlands on undeveloped properties have been discovered since that date. These are noted as they are discovered and still subject to review under Environmental Conservation Law and DEC regulation.
DEC "flagged" freshwater wetlands and the adjacent properties within 100' on the preliminary 1989 and final 1993 maps. Development on “flagged” property must be reviewed for potential impacts on the freshwater wetlands and adjacent properties. The review is triggered by an application to the Building & Housing Department. In the case of minor work, Maritime Services can conduct the review. Otherwise, the property owner must obtain a Freshwater Wetland Permit from DEC prior to acceptance of a permit application by Building & Housing.
