Homeowners Take Action!

Simple choices make a big difference.

Energy conservation can be about doing seemingly small things in addition to big things or the "deep dive" retrofits in sustainability parlanceSimple and free or low-cost conservation strategies cut down on energy usage and save money. When enough people focus on these little details, the benefit to the environment can be enormous.

Try this thoughtful Dozen:

  1. Turn off/unplug lights, electronics when not in use.
  2. Take shorter showers.
  3. Remember a short shower uses less energy than a bath.
  4. Don't leave water running when brushing teeth, shaving or washing dishes
  5. Close the Refrigerator when stepping away for more than a second or two.
  6. Recycle old appliances. Buy Energy Star Certified replacements.
  7. Install energy efficient bulbs and water-saving shower heads
  8. Insulate attics and walls.  "Find a hole. Seal a hole. Don't wait."
  9. Weatherstrip and caulk around doors and windows.
  10. Wrap heating and cooling ducts with duct or masking tape.
  11. Line dry clothes after washing in nice weather.
  12. Install a Programmable Thermostat.
