Greening Town Operations
Greening Operations:
In the attempt to move forward and become more energy efficient the Town has focused on attempting to reduce its electrical consumption and energy use. These issues are addressed in Town owned facilities and in operations such as street lighting, traffic lights, wastewater and water treatment facilities.
In Town buildings and operations, energy reduction is geared towards lowering the cost of our utilities. From the United States Department of Energy’s (USDOE) Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) and the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), funds were allocated to begin replacing existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) light fixtures within the town to high energy efficient induction fixtures. This replacing of fixtures will allow the town to reduce its electric consumption by more than half of its current usage.
In order to see what is being spent and how cost effective these projects are, we are also benchmarking every town owned property using the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Portfolio Manager Program. This allows the town to track the commodity usage for each facility as well as compare multiple facilities to gain further information that will help to reduce our carbon footprint even more. Tracking this information will also be useful in the future for making any building purchases and/ or retrofits.
