What Huntington's Doing
The town has adopted a systematic approach to sustainability that views our efforts through three different lenses: Long-Range, Wide Angle and Close-Up.
Long-Range: The Town is looking at the big picture, to prepare for the future and do our part to address issues of global importance like Climate Change and Sea-Level rise through participation in Federal and State sponsored carbon footprint reduction initiatives. These include the USDOE’s Better Buildings Challenge and NYSDEC’s Climate Smart Communities Pledge.
Wide-Angle: Sustainability takes on a regional focus, particularly when it involves challenges spanning a range of municipalities, such as protecting Long Island’s coastline, managing the safety and supply of drinking water in LI’s underground aquifers, making best use of LI’s limited supply of developable land and protecting open space and easing bottlenecks in LI’s complex infrastructure of tunnels, bridges and Highways. Huntington is, therefore, working hand-in-hand with Suffolk County and our sister towns through groups like the LI Green Homes Consortium, NYSERDA’s Cleaner Greener Communities, the Community Development Corporation of LI, Sustainability Institute at Molloy College, Vision LI and the Suffolk County Planning Commission Energy & Environment Task Force. Our goal is to make sure regional sustainability initiatives complement and reinforce one another.
Close-Up: Huntington prioritizes its capital spending plan to make sure buildings, vehicle fleets and daily operations are assessed, inventoried and bench marked to develop and carry out projects that allow the Town to become more efficient, reduce energy consumption, and generally to become leaner and greener, benefiting both taxpayers and the environment.
