Fire Marshal FAQ's

Where is the Office of the Fire Marshal located and what are the hours of operation? How may I contact the office?
● The Office of the Fire Marshal is in Rm. 106 of Huntington Town Hall located at 100 Main Street Huntington, New York 11743.
● The office is open Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm excluding holidays.

Are fire extinguishers required to be inspected?
Yes. Fire extinguishers must be inspected and tagged on an annual basis by an authorized concern licensed by the County of Suffolk to perform this work.

How may I disposes of an old fire extinguisher?
This information is available in the annual published Town Trash and Recycling Calendar available HERE.

Can fuel be delivered to a boat, or dock?
No. All fueling must be conducted at a marine gas fuel station and may not be conducted at Town facilities or on private property.

What permits are required to conduct my business?
A list of operational permits can be found in the Fire Prevention Code §111-56 of the Code of the Town of Huntington.  Fire Prevention Code

What are the operational permit fees?
Permit fee for operational permits are listed in the Fire Prevention Code §111-40 of the Code of the Town of Huntington.  Fire Prevention Code

I am conducting landscaping and, or land clearing activities on my property. Can I burn the debris (leaves, brush, twigs)?
No. Open burning is restricted to recreational fires only as outlined in the Fire Prevention Code §111-97 of the Code of the Town of Huntington.  Fire Prevention Code

I am considering the installation of fire protection equipment within my building. Are there any Town requirements to install fire sprinkler, fire alarm, or fire suppression systems?
Yes. The licensed concern contracted to install such equipment must apply for a construction permit from the Bureau of Fire Prevention.

A construction permit was issued for the installation of fire protection equipment within my building and is ready for inspection. Who may schedule the inspection and how can they contact the Fire Marshal to do so?
Construction permits are issued to a licensed concern who is responsible to perform the necessary inspection that must be witnessed by a Fire Marshal. Accordingly, requests for inspection must be made by the contractor of record by email to: fmoffice@huntingtonny.gov

I had a fire in my home or at my place of business, how can I obtain a copy of the fire report? I am seeking copies of records for a particular property which may include: fire prevention operational or construction permits, fire protection equipment plans and accompanying documents, notices of violation.

A Fire Marshal is scheduled to perform a fire and life safety inspection of my property. If violations are found will I be given a warning or will I receive a summons?
Generally speaking a notice of violation will be issued and corrective action will need to be completed within 30 days of issuance. If compliance is not completed within the prescribed time a summons may be issued upon re-inspection. Under certain conditions a summons may be issued at the time of initial inspection depending on the severity of the problem identified or hazard posed to individuals that occupy the premise.
