State Historic Site and Interpretive Center
Located in West Hills, NY, this restored farmhouse is the birthplace in 1819 of America’s greatest poet, Walt Whitman. The house built by Whitman’s father is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features period furnishings.
The Interpretive Center includes portraits, original letters, manuscripts, artifacts, Whitman’s voice on tape, and schoolmaster’s desk. Guided tours, audio-visual show, library, museum shop/bookstore, and picnic area are available, as are maps for auto/hiking tours of beautiful, historic West Hills that inspired the poet.
The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association conducts readings, seminars and other events throughout the year.
