Smoke Detector Disposal Information
There are two types of smoke detectors used in homes: 
Photoelectric Smoke Detector - Uses a light emitting diode and a light sensor in the sensing chamber. Photoelectric smoke detectors do not contain radioactive material and can be disposed of in your regular household trash.
Ionization Smoke Detector - Uses a small amount of radioactive material in the sensing chamber. Most smoke alarms in use are of this type. Although the amount of radioactive material contained in ionization smoke detectors is so small that it does not pose a risk to human health it is not recommended that they be disposed of with household waste. Ionization smoke detectors can be returned to the manufacturer for disposal. When returning a smoke detector to the manufacturer, include a note that indicates that the detector is intended for disposal and mail it to the address listed on the back of the detector.
Neither type of smoke detector is permitted for disposal at the Town of Huntington Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility.
