Temporary Park Installations - Archive (Town-Sponsored)

Town-sponsored temporary public art installations previously presented in Town Parks or at Town beaches, but that are no longer on view, are documented for archival purposes in this inventory category.  These installations typically consisted of either sculpture on loan from artists or temporary site-specific installations, sometimes made of ephemeral materials. 

Title: Knit for Trees

Artist(s):  Isabelle Garabani (Brooklyn, NY)

Year of Creation:  2012

Medium:  Recycled plastic bags

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  6 x 15 x 15 ft.

Description:  The artist has used recycled plastic bags to know colorful "tree sweaters" that adorn the trunks of several trees on one of the islands in Heckscher Pond  As the artist notes, "About 1 million plastic bags are used every minute worldwide.  Knit for Trees comments on this ecological disaster while acknowledging the futility of the fight."

Title:  Meander

Medium:  Turf, pea gravel, & quick-set concrete

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  10 x 40 ft.

Description:  A visual reversal of traditional paving where grass sprouts in the space between paving stones, in Meander the "spaces" are grass.  As the artist notes, Meander is an invitation to stroll and meditate within the greenery of nature.  Meander sneaks up through the grass like a memory, and links the past with the present moment of passing by."

Title:  Wrap Song

Medium:  Baling twine wrapped on steel armature

Description:  Two large semi-circular, harp-like forms made from baling twine strung on steel arcs are suspended on either side of a tree near the entrance to the Dix Hills Pool.

Title:  Wind Chimes

Description:  Five colorful "wind chimes" move in the breeze between two trees bordering the Greenlawn Park playground.

Title:  Weathervanes

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  Seven elements mounted on 10' high poles; size of elements vary

Description:  This delightful grouping of seven folk art-inspired weathervanes is arranged atop 10' high wooden posts along the edge of the park lawn near the harbor shore.  It encompasses a wide range of imagery, including a butterfly, a heron, and a goldfish, as well as several abstract compositions.

Title:  Tidal Time

Year of Creation:  2006

Medium:  Etched Plexiglas in cedar frame

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  72 x 96 x 6 in.

Description:  A triptych of etched Plexiglas panels mounted in a cedar frame on the fence overlooking Cold Spring Harbor.  The middle panel is etched with a topographic (aerial) view of the sand spit across the channel, including contour lines defining its slope.  The left panel is etched with outlines of the sand spit and other landscape elements as seen through the panel at high tide.  The right panel is a similar etched outline of the view as seen through the panel at low tide.

Title:  The Tall Tale Tree Project

Medium:  Straw, hemp, raffia, vine, stick, burlap & biodegradeable paper forms with storybook

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  9 elements @ 2 x 3 x 1 ft. with storybook

 Description:  Nine different sculptural elements suspended in a tree at the western end of the Dix Hills Pool parking lot (where parents drop-off their children for summer camp every morning) illustrate a children's short story titled Zuchini, which is printed on a "storybook" at the base of the tree.  Children are encouraged to search visually for the storybook "illustrations" hidden in the tree.

Title:  The Nest

 Description:  Four stone "eggs" lie in the center of an over-sized "nest" made of driftwood, branches, & sticks.

Title:  The Exchange

Description:  Two elongated, cone-shaped forms appear to be bowing to each other in formal greeting.

Title: Starlight

Medium:  Welded steel, solar cells, batteries & LEDs

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  3 spherical elements @ 3 ft. diameter

Description:  Three hollow spheres made of welded steel disks resembling "bagel chips" rest on low cement bases on an inaccessible island in Heckscher Pond.  After dark, the interior of each hollow orb glows.  The illumination is provided by three sets of photosensor-triggered 64-LED lights, powered by batteries wired to solar cells, all of which is contained within the interior of each orb.

Markings/Inscriptions:  Each "bagel chip" has welded "drawings" on its exterior surface.

Title:  Solar Bamboo Columns

Medium:  Bamboo, hemp rope, hay, Spanish moss, rebar, solar panels, batteries & LEDs

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  8 x 40 x 40 ft.

Description:  Several 8 ft. bamboo rods are woven together with hemp rope to form 25 hollow circular columns, each about 1 ft. in diameter.  These 25 bamboo columns are arrayed in a square 5 column x 5 column matrix.  Each column is illuminated from its interior at might by LED lights.  The lights are powered by batteries charged from solar panels on the upper surface of capitals that cap each column.

Title: Singing Lighthouse

Description:  Donna Fargo's 1974 country ballad "You Can't Be a Beacon If Your Light Don't Shine" is the continuously playing audio counterpoint to the striking visual image of an eleven-foot tall lighthouse complete with black & white spiral striping, red & white simulated masonry foundation, and, of course, a lighthouse beacon that doesn't shine.

Title: Seaman's Knot

Description:  A large seaman's knot of 3" diameter hemp rope is laid out on the sand.

Title: Rotten Rococo

Description:  A large gilt wooden picture frame, with gilt decorative elements made of recycled metal and plastic containers, frames the harbor scene beyond.

Title:  Pole Sculptures

Medium:  Lodge Pole pine & natural materials

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  3 elements @ 26 x 1 x 1 ft.

Description:  Three different "tipi" poles bear long streamers of natural materials at their apex.  One streamer is made of bundled marsh reeds, a second is made of the same reeds unbundled, and the third is made of strings of shells.  All natural materials used in creating the streamers were collected on site.

Title:  Moon Creature's Forest

Medium:  Welded steel & painted enamel

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  Seven elements mounted on 10' high poles; size of elements vary.

Description:  Seven wind-activated, sculptural elements are each mounted atop a 10' high pole.  The central element, a life-sized female "Moon Creature" lying on her side, rotates in the breeze as do three multi-colored, abstract forms.  Three "bouquets" of multi-colored shapes at the end of flexible rods vibrate gently.

Title:  Luncheon in the Sawgrass - Gator

Description:  The eyes and nostrils of an alligator peek up through the grass, imaginatively suggesting the 150 ft. animal lurking beneath.

Title: Golden Spiral

Description:  A bamboo fence progressively spirals inward and upward in accordance with the "golden mean" (an "ideal" proportion derived from the Fibonacci series).

Title:  Emergence

Title:  Eclipse:  Observatory

 Description:  Mirrored Plexiglas is suspended facing the ground within a box on top of a wooden frame 12' above the ground.  Viewers are invited to stand underneath frame and read the message written on the mirror. 

Markings/Inscriptions:  "Thing in itself" is inscribed on the mirror.

Title: C-Squared

Description:  A large "C-shaped" form, and a larger adjacent rectangular form from which the "C" appears to have been cut, both rest on a footed rectangular base, all of which are painted flat black.

Title:  Compass Points

Description:  This spherical assemblage of interlocking forms is evocative of the intricate "compass points" found on nautical charts and maps from the age of sail.  Sixty different pieces made from marine plywood are fitted with mathematical precision to create this unique geometric form.

Title: Bereishis

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  Three elements with total dimensions for the group being 9.6 x 6.4 x 6.3 ft.

Description:  Three bronze-colored elements, each slightly larger than a man, are grouped closely together as if in conversation.  Each element is comprised of a wide but relatively thin, gently-curving upright component with perpendicular bracing components and circular protrusions.

Title:  A Helping Hand

Description:  Four separate silhouettes of disembodied hands gesture at passersby.  As named by the artist, they include "Okay, we are here," "They're over there," "Thumbs up on a job well done," and "The Thing."

Title:  Unmanageable Hill

Artist(s):  Legge Lewis Legge, a collaborative artist team consisting of visual artist Andrea Legge (New York, NY), cinematographer Deborah Lewis (Austin, TX), and architect Murray Legge (Austin, TX)

Medium:  Dirt, sod, & cinch strapping

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  5 x 5 x 5 ft.

Description:  The lawn of Elwood Park takes a whimsically abrupt vertical journey in Unmanageable Hill, a steep, 5' high mound, covered with sod, and wrapped with bright yellow, nylon, cinch strapping. This work is described by the artists as “an act of extreme landscaping combining conventional materials of the American lawn with tools of the shipping industry: dirt, sod, and cinch strapping.”

Title:  A Guitar Grows on Long Island

Description:  An 8' tall guitar-shaped form made of woven vine is displayed on a tree in Billy Joel Park.

 Title:  Untitled #168

Artist(s):  Michael Joseph Hibbard (Buffalo, NY)

Year of Creation:  2007

Medium:  Welded sheet steel (painted) & concrete

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  6 x 4.5 x 3 ft.

Description:  This two-tone sculpture in painted steel and concrete presents a small, light-grey rectangular shape perched atop a more substantial dark-grey pyramidal form.  However, as with much of this artist's work, both subtle and dramatic changes in angles and planes introduce an intriguing irregularity into the geometry of the work.
