Knitting & Crocheting

Place: Senior Center
Room: 106
Day: Wednesday
Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Coordinator: Karen Galluzzo

Participants knit and crochet various items to donate to charity. Their donations are dispensed to various hospitals, charities and families in need. Some of their donations go to: Huntington Hospital, VA Hospital, Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC), Nursing Homes, Cancer Society, Women Heart Organization, Warmth for Warriors, and Hands on Huntington.

The charity workshop fills a need for both the seniors, and the people who receive the items. Our seniors are altruistic and helping others is reward enough for them!

Words from Charity Workshop’s Founder – Doreen McGlone: In 1997, I wanted to do more than just be a Craft Instructor or a Club Leader. I strongly felt that senior citizens in general were loving people with untapped talent(s) that were just going to waste. We experimented with our first venture, “Hats for the Homeless”. It was so successful that we had to do more. We were soon able to come up with other charities that needed our help. The Education Assistance Corp. needed comfort blankets for children that had been sexually abused and the Veterans Administration was also in need. I got as many knitters and crocheters together as I could with my own yarn at first, as well as donated materials. The Charity Workshop was founded. As it grew, I did a yearly presentation to donate all the items made that year to various organizations. We then started being contacted by more and more charities. We concentrated on local charities that would benefit by our efforts. I left Charity Workshop several years ago. However, I have recently returned as a participant. I am thrilled to be back with other caring seniors who continue to do the work started in 1997.
