The public is invited to join Huntington Town Supervisor Edmund J. Smyth, the Huntington Town Board, Chairman William Ober and members of the Huntington Veterans Advisory Board, and Town officials to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the Vietnam Memorial located on the historic Huntington Village Green honoring the Town of Huntington men who died in the service of our Country in the Vietnam War. The Huntington Women in Support of Our Men in Vietnam planted one Kwanzan Cherry Tree for each fallen hero and dedicated the Memorial in their honor on June 11, 1972. The Kwanzan Cherry trees on the Village Green are documented in Washington D.C. as the first living Memorial to the Vietnam War in the Nation.

“This will be an historic occasion commemorating the unveiling, one half-century ago, of the nation’s first living memorial to the sacrifice of American servicemembers in Vietnam,” said Supervisor Ed Smyth. “We are honored to host our veterans, family members of the heroes to which this monument is dedicated, and original members of the Huntington Women in Support of Our Men in Vietnam who donated this memorial to the Town 50 years ago in 1972.”

The 50th anniversary commemorative event will include a ballroom brunch at the Melville Marriott from 10:00am-12:00pm Saturday, June 11 featuring live musical entertainment by Island Symphony Orchestra and renowned tenor Christopher Macchio. The program will include participants: U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Ret. Frank Libutti, U.S. Army Major General Ret. Anthony R. Kropp, Msgr. Charles Fink, who penned the poem “Bury Me With Soldiers,” and original members of the Huntington Women in Support of Our Men in Vietnam. Tickets: $30/person; $300/table of 10, payable in the form of a donation to the Huntington Human Services Institute, Inc., a portion of which may be tax-deductible.

Following the ballroom brunch will be a free event at 1:30pm, open to the public, featuring a wreath laying at the Vietnam Memorial on the Huntington Village Green located at the southwest corner of Park Avenue and Main Street in Huntington, featuring patriotic music performed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Band, Flotilla 22-01 Huntington, NY.
