Northport -- The fifth annual Hunting-Tony Awards, held at the John W. Engeman Theater, packed the house with students, parents and faculty members who were involved in their high schools’ extra-curricular theatrical productions over the 2014/2015 school year. The Hunting-Tony’s had twenty-five categories that recognized acting, singing, dance performances, stage crew, scenery, orchestra pits, costumes and technical productions.
Sponsored by Town of Huntington Councilmembers Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland, and the John W. Engeman Theater of Northport, the Hunting-Tony Awards ceremony featured a pre-show in which student nominees, many of whom wore tuxedos and evening gowns, walked the red carpet. The show began with opening remarks from Councilman Cuthbertson and Councilwoman Berland and featured musical numbers from Northport High School’s “Beauty and the Beast,” Walt Whitman High School’s“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and Half Hollow Hills High School East’s “Kiss Me Kate”.
Councilman Mark Cuthbertson stated, “It is an honor to sponsor the 5th Annual Hunting-Tony Awards and to bring together and recognize such a talented group of students who participated in their schools’ theatrical productions. I want to thank Kevin O’Neill and Richard Dolce of the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport for hosting this event once again. I also want to thank all of the high school teachers, staff and students for all of the time and effort that they put into each and every one of these shows. I hope that the Hunting-Tony’s will help showcase and celebrate the dedication and talent of students in the performing arts in our community.”
“I am very proud to again be sponsoring the Hunting-Tony Awards,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “The dedication required to participate in these productions represents hours of time throughout the school year. As a supporter of the arts, I am proud to be part of an event that highlights and awards the talented youth within our Town and I am truly inspired by their work. Thank you to the Engeman Theater for their generous sponsorship of Hunting-Tonys and their ongoing efforts to ensure its success. Once again, congratulations to all the nominees and the winners.”
