Liberty 250

Welcome the Town of Huntington’s Liberty250 page!

In July 2025, the Town Board created a planning committee for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, comprised of representatives of the many heritage organizations and museums in Huntington. Since that time, member organizations have been working to plan and coordinate exhibits and programs to commemorate this once in a generation event.

The theme of Huntington’s celebrations focuses on Liberty and features the official Town flag which is the Liberty flag. The theme for the celebration is inspired by Huntington’s motto, “The Town Endures.” Likewise, the theme of our celebration is “Liberty Endures.”

On this page you will find a calendar of the events planned throughout the town to commemorate the anniversary. Please check with the organization sponsoring a particular program to confirm the time, place, and if there is a fee.

Featured events include a re-enactment by the Order of the Ancient and Honorable Huntington Militia of the day that the Declaration of Independence was first read in Huntington. Scheduled for July 18, 2026 (rain date July 19), the event will include a re-enactment of the creation of the Liberty flag as well as an encampment by the Militia on the Village Green, with tours of the Arsenal. Plans are being made for a pre-event parade.

Another featured event will be the re-dedication of the Nathan Hale memorial on Main Street in Huntingtin village. The local Daughters of the American revolution chapter is raising funds for restoration of the monument, which was originally dedicated in 1894.

This page also includes a map showing various sites in Huntington associated with Revolutionary War events and people and brief essays on such people and events.

Suffolk County has assembled a 250 Passport book to commemorate this historic occasion. This keepsake book invites residents and visitors alike to explore Revolutionary War sites, 18th-century landmarks, special exhibits and events in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Travel through Long Island's historic towns, visit participating museums and heritage sites throughout 2026, and collect a unique commemorative stamp at each stop. When complete, your passport becomes both a personal souvenir and a symbol of America's 250th Anniversary. The passport book is sold at no-profit from Amazon.com. The $8.32 charge is for "print on demand" and it is royalty-free. Some organizations in town have copies available for sale for $10. See https://suffolk250.org/ for more information and links to download or order the Passport.

The Huntington Historical Society has launched an app on Bloomberg Connects that includes short videos about Revolutionary war related sites, events and people. The app can be downloaded onto your cell phone through the App store. Search for “Bloomberg Connects” or scan the QR code below.
