Covanta Huntington
The Huntington Resource Recovery Facility began commercial operation in December 1991, serving the towns of Huntington and Smithtown. The facility, which operates as Covanta Huntington, is designed to process 750 tons per day of solid waste, which generates up to 25 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to the local energy grid. Covanta Huntington is the cornerstone of an integrated solid waste management system for these communities, where landfill waste disposal is prohibited by state law.
This facility is a disposal site for licensed solid waste haulers only, residents are not permitted to dispose of refuse at this site.
