Boating Safety
The Town of Huntington is serious about boating safety. The waters of the Huntington and Northport Bay complex, Cold Spring Harbor and Long Island Sound are among the most beautiful to boat on anywhere, but for those boating, sailing, kayaking or using any other means to navigate our coastal waters, safety must be priority number one.
The Huntington Harbormaster's Office and Huntington Bay Constables, in concert with partners in the Suffolk County Police Marine Division, the United States Coast Guard, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Long Island Chapter of the Neptune Sail and Power Squadron, seek to make Huntington and Long Island waters the safest they can possibly be.
ALL BOATERS ARE NOW REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A NYS CERTIFIED SAFE BOATING COURSE
Legislation passed in 2019 called Brianna’s Law, will require that commencing January 1st, 2025, all operators of motorized vessels, regardless of age, will be required to have a safety certificate and carry that certificate while underway.
The failure of a person to exhibit a boating safety certificate upon demand to any magistrate, peace officer, acting pursuant to his or her special duties, police officer, inspector of the state office of parks, recreation and historic preservation, traveling navigation inspector or other officer having authority to enforce the provisions of this chapter, shall be presumptive evidence that such person is not the holder of such certificate.
