Welcome to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes. We recognize that it is our duty and distinct honor to serve the residents and property owners of the Town of Huntington.
As the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, we administer the collection of property taxes. We also collect the Dix Hills Water District usage payments. Please note that taxes become a lien on December 1st of each year. The tax due dates are January 10th (for the first half) and May 31st (for the second half).
The following constitutes a schedule of penalty for the first half of your taxes:
- December 1st – January 10th – No Penalty
- After January 10th – 1% Penalty
- After February 10th – 2% Penalty
- After March 10th – 3% Penalty
- After April 10th – 4% Penalty
- May 11th - May 31st – 5% Penalty
After May 31st, taxes plus penalty and interest must be paid to the Suffolk County Comptroller, 330 Center Drive, Riverhead, New York 11901-3311. You can access the Suffolk County Comptroller at 631-852-3000.
With regard to your tax dollars, please note that the Office of the Receiver of Taxes is not a policy making office, rather, it provides an administrative function. We do not determine the tax rate or assessment. It is our responsibility to collect and distribute the taxes. Our actions are undertaken pursuant to New York State Real Property Tax Law and the Suffolk County Tax Act.
Please be aware that we collect the taxes for not just the Town of Huntington but also for the County and the school districts in the Town along with other taxing districts. As part of the budgeting process, public hearings are held for county, school, and town budgets. Some districts such as schools and libraries also hold annual votes to approve their budget.

STAR, a School Tax Relief Plan. There are two types of STAR: Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR. For more information on STAR or other exemptions, please contact the Assessor’s Office as indicated above. You may also contact New York State Department of Taxation and Finance regarding STAR by calling 518-457-2036.
