Temporary Park Installations - Current (Town-Sponsored)

Town-sponsored temporary public art installations currently on view in Town Parks or at Town beaches are documented in this inventory category.  These installations typically consist of either sculpture on loan from artists or temporary site-specific installations, sometimes made of ephemeral materials. 

Title:  Muse II

Artist(s):  Michael Poast (Long Island City, NY)

Year of Creation:  2006

Other Dates:  Installed May 21, 2008 on loan from the artist

Medium:  Welded steel (painted)

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  7.5 x 2 x 0.5 ft.

Description:  This work was created by splitting a steel I-beam vertically with a cutting torch and spreading apart the resulting two halves.  The brightly painted surfaces focus the viewer's immediate attention on the steel shapes created by the cutting torch in the interior of the beam, but just as important to the work is the negative space playfully created between the steel forms.

Title:  Stick Figures

Artist(s):  James (Slim) Cook (Shoreham, NY)

Year of Creation:  2008

Other Dates:  Modified in 2010; installed in 2012

Medium:  Galvanized steel conduit, copper pipe, & copper wire            

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  Each figure approx. 7-8 ft. tall

Description:  Four stylized "stick figures" of performing artists are suspended between support posts on the sides of the Chapin Rainbow Stage (two per side).

Title:  Ladder 3

Artist(s):  Charles Politakes

Year of Creation:  2012

Medium:  Cor-ten & stainless steel

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  18.5 x 2 x 0.25 ft.

Description:  This intriguing works consists of a pair of 18 ½’ tall spires made of Cor-ten & stainless steel formed in the shape of opposing sine waves.  As the viewer walks around Heckscher Pond these closely grouped spires appear to gradually interweave and separate in an unending cycle as one’s viewpoint changes.

Title:  Two Schools of Thought

Description:  A stylized school of yellow fish with blue stripes swimming from the left confronts a similar school of blue fish with yellow stripes swimming from the right, provoking viewers to ponder issues of diversity and tolerance.

Title:  Walking Trees/Talking Trees

Artist(s):  Richard Kirk Mills, with students from Northport High School & C.W. Post/L.I. University

Year of Creation:  2006

Medium:  Etched zinc printing plates

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  Each plaque: 14 x 7 x 1/16 in.  (height varies)

Description:  Sixteen different zinc plaques attached to trees along the perimeter trail in Dix Hills Park.  (Trail begins on either side of the Park entrance gates.)  Plaques are etched with tree identification drawings and text, along with an action verb celebrating the active role that trees play in our environment.

Title:  Untitled #191

Artist(s):  Michael Joseph Hibbard (Buffalo, NY)

Medium:  Welded sheet steel (painted)

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  12 x 4 x 6 ft.

 

Description:  This roughly pentagonal, monumental steel column is "bent" in two places in a shape similar to a crooked finger, with the faces on the interior of the hooked form painted bright aquamarine in contrast to the unpainted exterior faces.

Title:  Untitled #203

Medium:  Welded sheet steel (painted) & plastic mesh

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  15 x 5 x 0.5 ft.

 

Description:  This 15' high sculpture consists of two deep blue, drooping steel loops, one inside the other, suspended from a tree, with the center of the interior loop filled by a dark-purple plastic mesh.

Title:  Untitled #218

Medium:  Welded sheet steel (painted)

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  5.7 x 9.5 x 3.75 ft.

Description:  This angular steel geometric sculpture has the appearance of being a horizontal rectangular form transformed by tectonic forces that have fractured and contorted its planes into a new geometry, accentuated by the stark division of the work into white (lower) and dark brown (upper) painted halves whose common boundary further fractures these forms.

Title:  Bookworms

Artist(s):  John A. Bell (West Islip, NY)

Year of Creation:  2014

Medium:  Welded steel (painted)

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  Grouping of six (6) elements @ 6 x 2 x 2 ft.

Description:  A grouping of six colorful, vertical figurative elements topped by distinctive human-like heads presents a herd of "bookworms" each holding an open "book."  (This work was installed as part of a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibition in tribute to the late Fort Salonga sculptor, David Haussler, who has two of his works installed nearby as recent gifts to the Town.)

Medium:  Welded steel

Approx. Dimensions (HxWxD):  6.75 x 5 x 3 ft.

Description:  A grouping of three abstract figurative elements, two seemingly "adult" figures and one smaller "child" figure on a rectangular steel plate base.  The "child" appears to be pleading with the central "adult" figure, while the second "adult" turns away.   (This work was installed as part of a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibition in tribute to the late Fort Salonga sculptor, David Haussler, who has two of his works installed nearby as recent gifts to the Town.)

Description:  The 4-foot high silhouette of a hand making a "thumbs up" gesture.   (This work was installed as part of a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibition in tribute to the late Fort Salonga sculptor, David Haussler, who has two of his works installed nearby as recent gifts to the Town.)
