Arthritis Exercise

Place: Senior Center - Entrance through Red Awning
Room: Gym (Class size limit 40)
Day: Monday
Time: 10:00 - 11:00 am

Instructor: Barbara Fertig, from Suffolk County’s RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program)

This class uses weights, bands and balls to increase strength, balance, flexibility, and proper breathing. At the beginning we engage in cardiovascular exercises to pump up the heart. We do stretching of the spine, hamstrings, quads and most other upper body parts. We use weights to increase strength and balls to promote eye-hand coordination and move the lymph system against gravitational pull.

Instructor’s Biography: Before retiring, Barbara was a special education and regular education teacher in NYC. She was certified by the Arthritis Foundation and has been volunteering at the Senior Center since 2008. As a teenager, she taught dance and participated in college musicals. Barbara loves movement and feels it is an essential aspect of healthy aging. Presently, she emphasizes balance exercises to prevent falls. At times, brain exercises are incorporated as well for an additional challenge!
