Requirements for Awning Permit

All drawings for awnings must be signed and sealed by a licensed NYS architect or professional engineer. The following information is the minimum required to be on plans for awning permits:

1. Drawings (drawn to scale and fully dimensioned):

  • Plan view
  • Front and side elevations
  • Cross-section of awning frame

2. Details:

  • Size, shape, weight, and type of frame
  • Type of connections: welded, clipped, screwed, etc.
  • Description of wall or structural member awning is attached to
  • Type and size of fasteners and/or anchors

3. Flame retardant certificate:

  • Original certificate (red and white) must include the name, address, and telephone number of the awning company and the location of installations as well as the description of the fabric

4. All lettering, graphics, logos, etc. on the awning require a separate sign permit from the Town of Huntington Sign Bureau.

5. Any lighting or electrical work requires inspection by a Town-approved third party electrical inspection agency. The Town of Huntington does NOT conduct electrical inspections. 

6. B.C.N.Y Sections 1607 and 3105:

  • Awnings and canopies shall be designed for a uniform live load of 5 p.s.f. as well as snow and wind loads specified in Sections 1608 and 1609 with due allowance for shape, open construction, and similar features that relieve the pressure or loads.
  • Structural members shall be protected to prevent deterioration.
  • Awnings shall have frames of noncombustible material, fire-retardant treated wood of Type IV size, or 1 hour construction and shall be either fixed, retractable, folding or collapsible.

7. B.C.N.Y. 3105.4:

  • Canopy materials shall be constructed of rigid framework with an approved covering that is flame resistant in accordance with N.F.P.A. 701 or that has a flame spread index not greater than 25 when tested in accordance with A.S.T.M. E 84.

8. B.C.N.Y. 3202.3:

  • The vertical clearance from the public right-of-way to the lowest part of any awning, including valances, shall be 7 feet minimum.
