Requirements and Guidelines for Filing Applications

Please be advised that a Building Permit is required for the construction, alteration, moving, repair, and modification, demolition, in whole or in part or the change of use of any building or structure. In the case of properties within one of Huntington's incorporated villages (Asharoken, Huntington Bay, Lloyd Harbor and Northport) this function is handled by your village building officials.

Different kinds of improvements to real property require various permits, inspections and approvals. Specific forms necessary in connection with a building project are linked below and contain instructions and explanatory notes helpful to applicants. 

Applications can be sent via express or regular mail while Town Hall is closed. We will review applications without payments. The examiner will contact the applicant with the required permit fee.

Payments can be sent by mail or dropped off in the white mailbox in the front entrance of Town Hall. The mailbox is intended for residents to drop off mail to Town Hall, it is not intended to be used for applications. We are also accepting credit cards over the phone.

 

RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURES REQUIRING PERMIT:

Additions, Alterations, Antennas, Arbor, Awning, Balcony, Barn, BBQ (4'+), Cabana, Carport, Cellar Entrance, Chicken Coop, Chimney, Deck (8"+), Demolition, Dog Run, Elevator, Fence*(6'+ from grade), Finished Basement, Fireplace or Stove (Wood/Gas-Interior/Exterior), Garage (Attached/Detached) Gazebo, Moving a Structure, New Building, Patio (30"+), Pergola, Pool (Above/In-ground), Porch, Ramp, Regrade, Retaining Walls* (4' and over cumulative), Satellite Dish, Shed, Solar, Stable, Trellis 

 

COMMERCIAL STRUCTURES REQUIRING PERMIT: 

Additions, Antenna, Awnings, Balcony, Basement, Cellar Entrance, Communication Towers, Conversion - Change of Use, Demolition, Elevators, Entry Ramp, Fences* (6'+ from grade), Foundation, Garages, Hood & Duct, Interior Alterations, Kiosk, New Buildings, Parking Lot, Ramp, Retaining Walls* (4' and over cumulative), Satellite Dishes, Solar Panels, Storage Building, Vapor Room

Payment of Fees can be made in-person or over the phone by credit card.
