6/2/2020 - Lupinacci Comments on Tragic Death of George Floyd, Protests, and Words of Division

Huntington – Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci posted a statement on social media on June 2 regarding the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, ensuing protests, riots and words of division:

“What happened to George Floyd is a terrible tragedy and injustice that never should have happened. This was a horrifying killing of an innocent man in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Everyone agrees, those responsible for George Floyd's murder should be held accountable. That’s why we see diverse groups of people protesting peacefully in communities across the country. Sadly, outside agitators are taking advantage of this vulnerability to destroy communities, at a time when the entire country is vulnerable from the ongoing public health crisis, which has become a national economic crisis.

“We are lucky to live in a community where most people respect each other, our local businesses and law enforcement -- we’ve seen this with peaceful protests throughout our town over the past several days. Huntington is a wonderful place to live, raise a family, and do business and an example of what communities across the country can and should live up to.

“There's no place for racism in the Town of Huntington or anywhere in our nation. Yesterday's comments, from one individual, are not reflective of the sentiments of the vast majority of residents and business owners across the Town of Huntington.

“Yesterday, in Huntington Village, we had a diverse group of about one hundred residents peacefully protest the unjust tragedy in Minneapolis, who then made their way to Huntington Town Hall and kneeled on Veterans Plaza, around the flag pole, in a moment of silence for George Floyd. They respected the monuments to our veterans. They respected our local businesses. And I respect their moving tribute to justice.

“We should all respect the rights of one another, come together to heal from this national tragedy, and not give oxygen to the words of those who fuel division and spread hate.”
