10/19/2017 - Huntington Revises Deer Hunting Code
The Huntington Town Board, at its October 17 meeting, approved revisions to Town Code with respect to deer hunting, based on comments from residents since the code was amended two years ago to allow bow hunting, subject to state regulations.
The changes, sponsored by Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards, include requiring written notification to the Town and local police departments, as well as to residents whose homes are within 150 feet of a site, prior to the commencement of hunting. The changes also clarify where and the manner in which a long bow may be discharged. Prohibited are discharging over a public highway, within 150 feet of a dwelling, farm building, farm structure that is occupied or used, a school building, school playground, public structure or occupied factory or church. Long bow hunting will be permitted on private property only.
The Town is also preparing deer management guidelines that will work in tandem with the code amendment.
In other action, the Town Board:
-- updated and restructured membership in the Anti-Bias Task Force, broadening its representation and reflecting changing issues relating to bias since the Task Force was created in 1994. The change lists more than 30 groups – including religious, educational, cultural, age-related, gender-related and sexual-orientation-related organizations – that will be invited to identify representatives to serve on the task force, ensuring a broad base of community members who can identify potential issues and recommend appropriate actions and programs.
-- approved policies, procedures and criteria for placing memorial benches, trees and other symbols in Town parks, beaches and public places. The resolution comes in response to concerns raised about the aesthetics and saturation of memorials in certain Town facilities.
-- approved issuing a density flow credit certificate from the Town’s Density Rights Bank, equal to 862.5 gallons a day, for a four-unit veterans housing building at Depot Road and East Ninth Street, Huntington Station.
-- authorized sharing with the Village of Asharoken the cost of a one-year contract with First Coastal Consulting for professional services regarding the reconstruction of the Eaton’s Neck Causeway/Asharoken seawall.
-- authorized $57,650 from the Open Space and Park Improvements Reserve Fund to be used for the installation of new concrete curbs, sidewalk and handicap-accessible ramps relating to the realignment and signal changes at the intersection of Depot Road and East 17th Street, Huntington Station.
-- accepted donation of a park bench from the Greenlawn Lions Club in celebration of the Lions Club’s 100th assniversary. The bench will be placed on Smith Street.
-- approved the 2018 Public Art Plan.
-- established a policy of allowing early registration in Town summer camp programs for children of actively deployed military personnel.
-- scheduled a December 13 public hearing on an application by Klis Brothers Realty to consider a zone change on their property on Jericho Turnpike in East Northport to expand a commercial parking lot and to construct an addition that would connect two existing buildings on the site.
