Town of Huntington, NY - News Details

3/13/2017 - Petrone Declares Snow Emergency, Effective 12:01 a.m. March 14

In light of a blizzard forecast to start overnight, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone has declared an official snow emergency, effective at 12:01 a.m. March 14, and cancelled all Tuesday activities and scheduled meetings at Town facilities.

Among the cancellations is the Town Board meeting that had been scheduled for 2 p.m. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 21, also at 2 p.m. New dates will be set for all of the scheduled public hearings, including the application for a zone change to allow construction of an assisted living facility on West Hills Road in South Huntington.

“The forecasts are for a major storm with blizzard-like conditions that will start overnight and continue throughout the day, making travel difficult,” Supervisor Petrone said. “Residents should stay off the roads, and make sure to park their cars off the streets to facilitate plowing and access for emergency vehicles. “

Under a snow emergency, the Supervisor has the power to close roads, appropriate necessary equipment from all sources and make necessary purchases without following the usual procedures. The declaration also makes available to the Highway Department Town equipment and personnel to assist Highway Department crews.

The cancelled activities include those at the Village Green Senior Center; Adult Day Care; all activities at the Dix Hills Ice Rink, Parks Department programs at local schools and at Coindre Hall; and all Youth Bureau programs.

Town Hall had a delayed opening at 10:30 a.m., but closed at noon because of a power outage.

Tuesday residential trash collection is cancelled. Commercial pickups are still scheduled for businesses in Huntington Village and Huntington Station that have evening curbside collection. But the businesses should check the Town’s website, Facebook page or Twitter feed for updates. UPDATE: Curbside pickup was canceled for the day.

HART Bus paratransit and fixed route service are cancelled.

Persons who want to report an emergency should call 631-351-3234. Persons needing to contact the Highway Department should call 631-499-0444, 631-351-3075 or 631-351-3076. Residents can also contact the Highway Department through the home page of the Town’s website, www.huntingtonny.gov, or by email at highway@huntingtonny.gov.

Supervisor Petrone advised residents to check the Town’s website, Facebook page, Twitter feed or government access channels 18 (Cablevision) and 38 (FIOS) for updates.
