Town of Huntington, NY - News Details

8/17/2016 - Huntington Town Clerk's Archives Now Part of State Digital Heritage Collection

Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia is pleased to announce the launching of the Huntington Town Clerk’s Archives digital collection project (ContentDM), which is a part of the online New York State Heritage Digital Collection.

ContentDM is a digital collection management software founded in the 1960s by the Online Catalogue Library Consortium and it is being used by more than 2000 archival repositories, museums, libraries and cultural heritage organizations worldwide.

“My goal is to make available online worldwide, a wide range of the Town’s historical documents as a contribution to education and research,” stated Ms. Raia. The Huntington Town Clerk’s Archives is a local government repository established in 1993 under the direction of Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia. It houses 3000 linear feet of permanent records dating back to 1653, the date the Town was founded. The mission of the repository is to identify, collect, preserve and organize resources essential to the Town’s legal, fiscal, administrative and historical needs. Dedicated to promoting local history and teaching through the use of historical documents, the Archives makes its holdings available to scholars, students, filmmakers, reporters, elected officials, business people and the community. “We assist researchers, issue publications, prepare exhibits and presentations, host tours and activities, and participate in local history events,” said Ms. Raia.

The Manuscript collection housed in the Huntington Town Clerk’s Archives is one of several groupings of records and includes some of the County’s greatest manuscript treasures. The collection consists of 193 bound volumes, 52 linear feet of material and 200 maps/drawings documenting all aspects of Town history.
The Archives is focused on improving access to its historical records and ensuring their availability for future generations. It has been recognized nationally and by the New York State Education Department, winning numerous awards. It is viewed as a model for other municipal archives to follow.

“We invite all to learn more about our activities and holdings by visiting us or by viewing our digital collection,” encouraged Ms. Raia.
