Shots will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 15 in Town Hall parking lot
The Town of Huntington, the Suffolk County SPCA and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services will be holding a rabies vaccination clinic on Sunday May 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Town Hall.
Free vaccinations will be provided to dogs, cats and ferrets, and a representative from the Town Clerk’s office will be present for owners to license their dogs. To receive the vaccinations, the animals must be at least four months old. All dogs must be leashed, and cats and ferrets must be in carriers.
“With recent reports of rabies cases on Long Island, pet owners should make sure that their pets’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “We hope pet owners who have not done so will take advantage of this free clinic to make sure the pets are properly vaccinated.”
New York State and Suffolk County law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating a pet not only provides protection for the animal, but vaccinated pets act as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. It is very important to make sure that these animals, as well as livestock and horses, have current rabies vaccinations.
In March, following the capture of a rabid raccoon in Nassau County, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services ordered increased surveillance of raccoons in Babylon and Huntington, the two Suffolk towns that border Nassau, and asked for the public’s help in reporting raccoons that come into contact with humans or pets, as well as abnormally acting raccoons and dead raccoons. Residents are asked to report sightings to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services by calling 631-852-5900, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. After hours, call 631-852-4820.
While the vaccinations are free, a $10 donation to the Suffolk County SCPA would be appreciated.
