2/2/2018 - Lupinacci Recognizes Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest Winners
Huntington Station – Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci joined January 30 in recognizing two Long Island School for the Gifted students who were selected as runners up in an Hispanic Heritage Month Student Essay Contest sponsored by cable television provider Altice.
Julia Mandolios and Angel Mendoza, both competing in the grades 6-8 category, each were presented with IPads as prizes in the competition, in which Altice partnered with Condista, a Spanish content distribution company representing 25 Spanish-Language networks from Latin America and Europe. The contest was open to students who attend school in the communities served by Altice’s Optimum and Suddenlink systems. Students had to submit an essay of 500 words or less that answered the question: “Name a Latino, past or present, with whom you would choose to spend a day, and explain why.” A grand prize winner and three runners up were chosen in each of two age groups, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12.
Julia’s essay spoke about why she had chosen Sara Martinez Tucker, former Under Secretary of Education and current chief executive office of the National Math and Science Initiative. Angel’s essay detailed why he had chosen his great-grandfather. Many other students from the school entered the competition; they received participation certificates.
“Congratulations to Julia and Angel for their inspirational essays, that exemplify the goal of the competition: to highlight the different ways Latinos have inspired all of us and serve as role models,” Supervisor Lupinacci said. “And congratulations to school Principal Pat Geyer and the students’ teacher, Jayne Amari, for fostering the environment in which these two students and their classmates produce award-winning work.”
